What would Francis have Catholics think on the reality of Satan? No doubt, he would admonish listeners to take the advice of his predecessor, the first Pope: "Keep sober and
alert, because your enemy the devil is on the prowl like a roaring lion,
looking for someone to devour;" and to listen to the Apostle, who
encouraged Christians to "Put on the full armor of God so as to be able
to resist the devil's tactics."
As I discussed at length in The Smoke of Satan, Jesus and the apostles had much to say about the reality of the devil. Thus the Pope rightly writes
and speaks about the reality in which Christians are supposed to believe. But will those excited by his accession as Vicar of Christ heed his call?
